"Latest WWE rumors include Mike Santana’s contract status, Gunther’s possible SummerSlam direction and the newest Ilja Dragunov update"
Quick Facts
• Date: July 1, 2026
• Reported: Mike Santana’s TNA contract is expected to expire in July
• Confirmed on WWE TV: Gunther and Nick Aldis were sent home after their Night of Champions altercation
• Reported: Ilja Dragunov is expected back on WWE programming soon, but no date is confirmed
WWE rumors entering July are centered around three separate stories that may eventually intersect: Mike Santana’s contract situation in TNA Wrestling, WWE’s developing Gunther and Nick Aldis angle, and fresh reporting on Ilja Dragunov’s return timetable.
Of those developments, only one currently exists on official WWE programming. On Raw, WWE announced that Gunther and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis had both been sent home following their physical confrontation after Night of Champions, while Aldis was placed on administrative leave and Adam Pearce assumed temporary oversight responsibilities. That storyline update aired directly through WWE television and remains the only confirmed development among the three major talking points.
The rest remains reporting and speculation.
According to PWInsider reporting carried by multiple outlets, TNA World Champion Mike Santana’s current agreement is expected to expire sometime in July. Separate reporting from WrestleVotes has indicated WWE maintains interest and would prefer Santana on the main roster before the end of 2026 if a deal happens. No agreement between Santana and WWE has been announced, and TNA has not publicly stated that negotiations are finished.
Meanwhile, discussion around Gunther’s next direction accelerated after the Aldis confrontation. Rumor reporting connected to Wrestling Observer discussion has suggested WWE creative may be considering Gunther vs. Nick Aldis for SummerSlam. At this stage, WWE has not announced such a match and there is no official event placement.
Where Ilja Dragunov fits into WWE’s SummerSlam picture
Ilja Dragunov’s name returned to the conversation because of a separate report from Bryan Alvarez stating that the former United States Champion is expected back on WWE television “sooner than later.” No injury update, return date, or opponent has been confirmed publicly.
That matters because Dragunov and Gunther already carry established in-ring history that WWE could revisit whenever Dragunov returns. Still, there is currently no verified indication that Dragunov is replacing Aldis in any planned SummerSlam direction.
For now, these stories should be treated independently: Santana remains a contract watch, Gunther and Aldis is an active WWE storyline, and Dragunov’s return remains a reported expectation rather than an announced comeback.
What this means next
The next meaningful checkpoints are straightforward: whether TNA clarifies Santana’s status, whether WWE advances the Gunther-Aldis angle on television, and whether Dragunov reappears before SummerSlam build intensifies.
Until then, the strongest signal remains the one shown on screen, not the one discussed in rumor reports.
