"Finn Bálor revealed WWE nearly named him Rux before Triple H rejected it over RuPaul concerns"
For more than a decade, Finn Bálor has carried one of the most recognizable names in modern wrestling, but fans nearly saw him debut in WWE under something completely different.
During a recent appearance on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” podcast, Bálor revealed that WWE once considered calling him “Rux” before the idea was quickly rejected by Triple H.
According to Bálor, several names were presented to him after he arrived in WWE’s developmental system in 2014. One option heavily supported by Triple H was “Liv,” while another on the internal list was “Rux.”
However, the former WWE Champion said Triple H immediately dismissed that suggestion because he believed audiences would connect it to RuPaul.
The unexpected comparison became one of the funniest moments from the interview and offered fans a rare look into WWE’s creative naming process behind the scenes.
The Story Behind The Name That Finally Stuck
Instead of accepting one of WWE’s original choices, Bálor explained that he personally crafted the name “Finn Bálor” using inspiration from Irish mythology.
He combined the legendary hero Finn McCool with Balor, the mythical one-eyed demon king from Gaelic folklore. The result became a character identity that perfectly matched the darker energy he later brought to television with his famous Demon persona.
The interview also highlighted how involved Triple H was in shaping talent presentations during the NXT expansion years.
While many wrestlers have spoken about receiving long lists of possible ring names, Bálor’s story stood out because the rejected option was discarded over pop culture concerns rather than branding issues.
Stephanie McMahon even joked during the conversation that Bálor and RuPaul looked nothing alike, adding another layer of humor to the exchange.
Today, it is difficult to imagine Bálor entering arenas under any other identity. “Finn Bálor” became a global wrestling brand, proving that the final decision was ultimately the right one for his career and WWE history.
