"WWE teased subtle heel turns at SNME XLIV as frustration grew before Clash in Italy 2026"
Saturday Night’s Main Event XLIV did not feature any official heel turns, but WWE quietly pushed several characters into more uncomfortable territory.
The show in Fort Wayne focused heavily on frustration, ego, and desperation instead of clean victories. That shift may matter more than the match results themselves heading into Clash in Italy.
The clearest example came from Becky Lynch. Her match against Sol Ruca ended after Lynch intentionally dragged the referee into danger to escape losing clean. The post-match assault made the situation even worse.
WWE has portrayed Lynch as increasingly defensive since winning the Women’s Intercontinental Championship, and SNME XLIV pushed that attitude further into hostile territory.
Ethan Page also walked away looking different despite losing to Penta. The challenger repeatedly looked for shortcuts during the Intercontinental Title match and even exposed the turnbuckle in desperation.
WWE clearly wanted fans to see a talented wrestler becoming more impatient as bigger opportunities slip away.
WWE quietly added tension around several top names
Charlotte Flair may be another name worth watching. Her uneasy chemistry with Rhea Ripley and Alexa Bliss stood out during the six-woman tag match. Flair has rarely stayed comfortable inside alliances for long stretches, and WWE cameras repeatedly focused on visible frustration after the loss.
The Street Profits also feel closer to snapping after another chaotic defeat against The Vision.
Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins continue to lose because of outside interference and numbers games. WWE may eventually use that frustration to reshape the team’s personality, especially with The Vision constantly embarrassing opponents through manipulation instead of dominance.
One more interesting case is Rhea Ripley herself. Ripley has remained one of WWE’s most popular stars, but SNME XLIV showed cracks in her patience.
Her interactions with Flair carried visible irritation, and WWE could eventually lean into a more ruthless version of Ripley if the women’s division becomes increasingly crowded before SummerSlam.
Saturday Night’s Main Event XLIV felt less like a standalone special and more like a warning sign. WWE did not rush any dramatic betrayals, but the company quietly moved several stars into emotionally unstable territory.
That kind of storytelling usually matters later, especially when bigger premium live events are approaching quickly.
